Certaldo Alto, the birthplace of Boccaccio

On the occasion of the seventh centenary of the birth of Giovanni Boccaccio, Certaldo becomes a stage for various artistic activities including the workshop entitled from textile art to a new mixed media.
Gloria Campriani’s course is part of this historical scenario presenting a contemporary artistic language that is rooted in the history of the territory from the twelfth century when the production of fabrics was regulated by the Corporazione dell’Arte della Lana (Wool Guild) in Florence.
The transition from craftsmanship to industrial production came about in the second half of the 1800s but Prato’s real boom began after the Second World War between 1950 and 1981.
The overcapacity of textile production especially for the fashion industry has not, in our area, contributed to the development of textile art, which has often been suffocated.
Textile art, in fact, was born and developed together with the post-avant-garde and conceptual art in northern Europe and the United States of America. Today we can find experimental laboratories very active in the United States itself, Japan, Eastern Europe and South America.
Course program
The course presents a new form of contemporary textile art studying the path and experiments of an artist who chose to express herself with thread, born from the long textile tradition in Tuscany and that of her family.
The workshop is for those who want to learn textile art, experimenting a new artistic language which includes especially the use of woollen thread and watercolors.
Created on the basis of her own experience, the mixed media of the artist, favours the reflection and insight of various and specific contemporary languages.
In constant evolution, a thread for pencil, also wants to stimulate new experiments to achieve evermore contemporary expression.
The symbolic language bound by the thread, in fact, often appears as a model for connecting, concatenation and the link between events. It results, in fact, in an appropriate instrument to express a social fabric made from threads and their cross-linking.

Gloria Campriani was born in Certaldo in the textile world of her family and has worked for many years in the fashion field. This experience was at the base of her choice to use thread as a main instrument  for her artistic work. Coming from the world of textiles, formed the base for her particular interest in the Fiber Art artistic movement, from which she takes inspiration, in a more contemporary concept of the term. The artist, in fact, does not make use of any technical instrument other than her hands in order to achieve textures. She undertakes projects aimed at the understanding and promotion of contemporary art, encouraging textile art and presenting her new language by the use of videos and installations, stimulating new research and experimentation.
